You’re not likely to get bored in an area where there’s such a great variety of interesting things to see. Take your camera. You might want to record your experiences for posterity!

You’ll find ideas on Dartford’s website or Gravesend’s Towncentric site. You can visit Towncentric in Gravesend to book tickets or get advice in person. Here’s a selection of the area’s highlights:

  • Take a guided tour of historic Cobham Hall. Hear about its connection with cricket’s famous ‘Ashes’, and don’t miss Darnley Mausoleum atop Williams Hill.
  • Visit the National Trust’s Kentish Yeoman’s family home and garden at Owletts.
  • Gravesend’s ‘Three Daws’ pub is the oldest in Kent, with secret tunnels once used by smugglers. The nearby ‘Ship and Lobster’ is reputedly ‘The Ship’ in ‘Great Expectations’. The Leather Bottle, Cobham was Dickens’s favourite.
  • Visit Gravesham’s Riverside for children’s amusements and a stroll along the promenade, or Dartford’s Central Park to see the landscaped gardens, skateboarding or a walk along the Darent Valley path
  • See a 15th century George and Dragon wall painting in historic Holy Trinity church Dartford
  • Visit Gravesend’s Cold War Bunker in Woodlands Park or the forts at New tavern and Shornemead to find out more on the heritage of the area
