Three proposals for the Ebbsfleet Landmark, by Daniel Buren, Richard Deacon and Mark Wallinger, have been selected for further development, it was announced on Wednesday.

The Ebbsfleet Landmark will be the UK's largest and most significant public art commission since Antony Gormley's Angel of the North and will be an enduring symbol of the new development of Ebbsfleet Valley and Ebbsfleet International Station.

Victoria Pomery, Director of Turner Contemporary in Margate, and Chair of the Selection Panel for the Ebbsfleet Landmark Project said: "The panel was very excited by all the submissions and has decided to take three forward for further development before making a final decision. We have asked Mark, Daniel and Richard to refine their proposals and to explore the engineering and cost feasibility in more detail. Our aim is to meet again in January to review their work in the light of this information."

The Ebbsfleet Landmark Project is a rare example of large-scale private patronage. The three founding patrons: Eurostar, Land Securities and London and Continental Railways, the company behind High Speed 1, have committed extensive seed funding to bring together this world class field of international artists and are making the site available.

Chairman of the Ebbsfleet Landmark Project, Stephen Jordan said: "With such an outstanding range of proposals, it's right that we now look carefully at the practical delivery of each and explore further funding options. After all, this commission will not just be here for years but for generations to come. With over 40,000 people commenting on the proposals at the Bluewater exhibition, this has not only been a monumental consultation exercise but one that has proved extremely useful and constructive."

At over 1,000 acres, three times the size of Hyde Park, Ebbsfleet Valley will be transformed over the coming decades into a new community of up to 10,000 homes, with offices, retail, leisure and community facilities, set in 400 acres of open space and parkland. Along with Eurostar's 186mph services to and from the continent, Ebbsfleet International station will also have high-speed domestic services to St Pancras International in London. The Landmark will be sited in Springhead Park, the south east corner of Ebbsfleet Valley.
