Northfleet Chimney is Demolished

5th February 2010

The demolition of the 350ft chimney at the Lafarge cement works in Northfleet completed the demolition work on the west side of this regeneration site.

The site is currently being cleared in order for the proposed creation of an import / export terminal as part of a wider mixed-use plan for the area.

The controlled demolition took place on Sunday 31st January at 11.30am. The 350ft chimney was the smallest of three on the wider Northfleet Embankment site. It is expected that the two larger chimneys will be demolished later this year.

A Lafarge spokesman said: "The chimney was added to the Bevans works in 1958. The chimney was pre-weakened before being demolished using explosives."

Northfleet Embankment is a development opportunity in the heart of Kent Thameside. The area comprises 87 hectares and extends along 2km of Thames Riverfront.
