Huge investment is being made in Kent Thameside’s transport infrastructure.

The area has unrivalled public transport links with mainland Europe, centred around the new Ebbsfleet International Station. Regular Eurostar services to Paris, Brussels and Lille started in November 2007. High speed domestic services follow 2 years later, with journey times from Ebbsfleet to St Pancras of just 17 minutes.

Public transport is critical to the regeneration of Kent Thameside. Central to this is a new, high quality bus rapid transport network – Fastrack – designed to link existing communities with new developments, and to encourage high levels of public transport use.

Two Fastrack routes are now open and provide regular connections to the area’s major rail stations for onward travel on Southeastern’s train services. Arriva operates an extensive bus network serving the area.

On the motorways and roads, the Highways Agency is currently carrying out 3 major schemes in the area.

  • Widening the M25 between junctions 1b and 3, completion scheduled for autumn 2008.
  • A £120 million major improvement scheme to reduce congestion on the A2 / A282 at Dartford. In December the northbound link was opened. This link road includes the new flyover over junction 2. Finishing works are due to be completed by mid 2008.
  • Widening the A2 to 4 lanes in both directions between Pepperhill and Cobham junction.

Measured in time of transport and communication, the whole round globe is now smaller than a small European country was a hundred years ago.
