Gravesend canal basin future vision
Developed as a riverside commercial area from the early 19th century onwards, the area surrounding the Gravesend Canal Basin represents a major regeneration opportunity lying immediately east of the Gravesend Town Centre. At its heart lies the Canal Basin itself, now used as the Embankment Marina but formerly the western end of the Thames and Medway Canal constructed between 1800 – 1824.

The mixed-use regeneration of the area will become a focal point on the Thames waterfront and add significantly to the strategic importance of the Riverside Leisure Area and Gravesend Town Centre as quality locations. Work is already under way on the delivery of a £120 million redevelopment that will deliver up to 1,000 new homes and business space:
  • Apartments and town houses have already been built at Queens Quay and the Embankment
  • Further developments will include improvements to the Riverside Leisure Area, the marina and a new neighbourhood centre
  • Potential restoration of the Thames and Medway Canal could form an important portion of Kent Thameside’s ‘Green Grid’. Part already links to National Cycle Route 1.
  • Further regeneration opportunities may be realised through improvements to infrastructure, including a bridge link to North East Gravesend.
