Swanscombe Peninsula: living for the future |
|
The potential of Swanscombe Peninsula as a regeneration site has yet to be fully explored. The eastern side of the Peninsula is characterised by large scale industrial and commercial sites occupying the low lying shore of the marshes, making use of the naturally self scouring deep water wharves available here.
Away from the riverside there is an area of marsh and agricultural land to the east. This land is low lying and susceptible to flooding should there be a breach of the flood defences during an extreme tidal flood event. The likely approach to development will be to consolidate around existing uses:
- By relocating existing river related uses, some sites may be freed for development along the waterfront.
- Existing areas of residual marsh and green space are likely to be retained to form part of the Kent Thameside Green Grid and link with potential leisure and recreation uses on the western side of the Peninsula to serve Ingress Park.

The marshland on West Thurrock Peninsula and Swanscombe Peninsula gives the Reach a semi-rural character, and creates a sense of openness along the river.
