Kent Thameside enjoys high level protection from flood risk, estimated at less than a 1 in 1000 chance in any year. The standard of defence from tidal flooding in the urban area of Kent Thameside is the highest in the country. Despite the low probability of tidal flooding, the consequences could be severe.
Kent Thameside Delivery Board has therefore undertaken a Strategic Flood Risk Assessment (SFRA) to provide an analysis of the main sources of flood risk in the area. The SFRA provides the means of assessing the level of risk faced site by site. A review of the SFRA, in the light of the latest sea-level predictions, is currently underway.
The majority of homes will be in areas with little or no risk of flooding. The local planning authorities are publishing their site specific allocations for their Local Development Frameworks which will show specifically how they have taken the risk of flooding into account in the allocation of development sites.
They will also take into account the results from the major Environment Agency study of the options for managing the risk of flooding in the Thames estuary over the next 100 years, Thames Estuary 2100, as they become available.
